Open Model Projects

Structure of the Initiative

Open Model Projects are initiated by either one single person, a group of people or organizations like universities or companies. Basically, there are three different types of projects that can be set up in the context of our Open Model Initiative:

Modelling Projects

The most obvious activities within the scope of our initiative deal with the creation of actual model content. Such projects make use of existing modelling methods and modelling environments in order to depict the aspects of reality that are of interest for some reason. For instance, in the course of modeling projects reference models for various domains (e.g. healthcare, logistics, commerce, …) or organizational departments (purchase, distribution, marketing, …) could be developed.

Method Development Projects

This type of projects is concerned with the creation of new or the further development of existing modelling methods. In the course of method development projects modelling languages, modelling procedures as well as mechanisms & algorithms are only designed conceptually. Their concrete implementation is not addressed here but in separate projects.

Modelling Environment Development Projects

Here IT-based modeling tools are created and further developed that are based on existing modelling methods. The scope of such modelling environment projects can vary to a great extent. On the one hand completely new software tools could be created from scratch which is a very challenging task. On the other hand existing modelling tools could be extended in order to realize support for new modelling languages or processing algorithms.

Proposition and Initiation of new Projects

All projects are started by a “chief developer” that has the role of an “initiator”. He/she provides the initial draft of the solution which is developed within the project and puts it on the Community Platform so that it is accessible to other participants of the Open Model Initiative. If the solution is also of interest for other community members, then a group of “active users” will form that apply the solution and report bugs as well as suggestions for the further development in terms of improvements, extensions, and modifications.

To propose a new project, please access the projects section. If you have questions refer to this article with the explanation of the projects table.
