Abstract:
Conceptual visual models have been used for a long time in several domains. The aim of the Semantic-based Modeling Framework for Information Systems (SeMFIS) is to enable the semantic enrichment of such conceptual models by annotating them with machine processable semantic information. This semantic information may be expressed in a variety of formats including controlled vocabularies, thesauri or ontologies. Thereby, the semantic content of the models can be made explicit and shared to conduct semantic analyses, enhance interoperability, or act as input for the formal representation of knowledge. For this purpose the framework provides a set of meta models and algorithms together with according tools that will be made freely available in the course of the Open Models Initiative on www.openmodels.at/web/semfis/. In this talk the foundations of the framework and the current status of the implementation will be presented and illustrated by use cases from the domains of health and business process management.

Communities are usually defined as being groups of interacting individuals that share common values and follow a common goal. In our context this means that an Open Model Community shares the vision of Open Models and is interested in the distributed and cooperative development of models as well as according foundations.

The second major technical foundation for being able to create models in a distributed and cooperative way are IT-based modeling environments.
